Teaching and learning are fundamental to growth and success. JP James emphasizes that teaching is not just about imparting knowledge but also about deepening one’s own understanding. He is passionate about teaching because it allows him to continue learning. Despite not excelling academically in his early years, he realized that true learning happens when one applies and shares knowledge.
Reflecting on his own journey, JP acknowledges that while formal education has its place, true success often comes from hands-on experience and self-driven learning. He notes that opportunities for young entrepreneurs are expanding, with initiatives like the Peter Thiel Foundation encouraging students to pursue real-world ventures. However, this was not the case when he was younger such as lack of resources, knowledge, and connections—made the path to entrepreneurship seem daunting.
Nonetheless, JP firmly believes that to truly master a subject, one must teach it. Passive learning through reading and listening has its limitations. Studies indicate that retention rates differ significantly between reading and listening to audiobooks. While both are valuable, the next step in the learning process is actively teaching others. By breaking down and explaining concepts, individuals not only reinforce their understanding but also contribute to the growth of those around them.
Teaching, for JP, is deeply ingrained—perhaps even genetic, given his family's long history of educators. He sees teaching as an essential skill, one that drives both personal and professional success. Whether mentoring team members or sharing insights in everyday conversations, teaching fosters a cycle of continuous improvement, ensuring that knowledge is not just acquired but effectively applied.
